World Health Organization today declared the disease as a pandemic.

“We can expect the number of cases, deaths, and affected countries to increase,” said the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

WHO justifies the declaration of a pandemic with “alarming levels of spread and inaction.” “Countries can still change the course of this pandemic if they detect, test, treat, isolate, track and mobilize people in the response,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Director-General of WHO said in a press conference that the Covid-19 epidemic had reached a pandemic level because there are more than 118,000 cases of infection in 114 countries and 4,291 deaths. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus recalled that the pandemic declaration “does not change what countries should do” to halt the spread of the new coronavirus, a family of viruses that can cause respiratory infections like pneumonia.

PROGRAM

Theme: Covid Field Hospital

Objective:

This challenge aims to design a field hospital to combat the pandemic generated by Covid-19.

For that, it will be necessary to think of a structure that can quickly assemble in different places spread worldwide with very different characteristics from each other. More than a hospital, it is intended that this structure can fight the pandemic also upstream, with a large vaccination center and mass testing.

Program:

- Internment 1000 beds; Intensive care 300 beds; Independent vaccination circuit; Independent covid testing circuit;

- Technical areas; Support areas for doctors and nurses;

- Vaccination booths; Car park for covid testing;

-Areas: There are no specific areas. These must be in line with the purpose of the contest.

-Location: Any city in the World

This contest is an academic exercise that aims to make us reflect on the role of architecture in society and its importance in emergency scenarios.

24H competition 37th edition – pandemic

“COVID shows that no country is prepared for a global pandemic, no matter how its health system is. All competitors are experiencing this new reality, and the solutions presented  act on various aspects of the disease, in addition to the creation of extra hospital beds. How do our day to day urban spaces respond to this? How to isolate and transport the patient? How to protect society while caring for the sick? “ Sara Pelicano, arch.

“This pandemic revelled a urgent necessity of planning the response to any other catastrophe to come. The presented proposals showed great thoughts of emergency architecture with a quick and effective response to the theme. The projects can be characterized into 3 main groups: POPUP, Mutable, and Transformer with great insight of the importance of architecture in public health”, Pedro Santos, arch.

“ Idea competitions should work like group brainstorming, generating discussion and critical thinking. It is a great way to experiment and test new programmes, through free-form approaches that can speculate what future might be. It is also a huge opportunity to evolve and discuss among peers. (The contest should promote more contact between participants so that the discussion can resonate and promote the confrontation of ideas. Most of the benefit of this kind of experience is lost in the lack of real time dialogue)”, Cristina Mendonça, arch.

Winners

1st PLACE - ID000210:

 "This proposal stands out for the themes approached as well as for its conceptual formalisation. The street occupation with prefabricated modules that can be easily made, transported and connected to the city facilities can turn this proposal in one of the most feasible. At the same time, the questions it raises can work as a trigger to the discussion of the Pandemia subject in architecture." Cristina Mendonça, arch.

“COVID emptied the onced crowded city streets, all around the world. New spaces for treatment and vaccines are needed. A new and urgent purpose wherever it is needed - simple and clear idea, based on recent and shared experience.” Sara Pelicano, arch.

“The proposal demonstrates versatility and adaptability to different urban morphologies in relation to uses and functions. The constructive system is ingenious, consistent, and consistent with the contest's premises.” Joanna Helm, arch.

“Excellent idea for the control of a pandemic in a city that is under lock down.” Pedro Santos, arch.

2nd PLACE - ID000910:

“Clearily this struture shows some appects of self assembly, usage of the energy spent on the its constrution and its operantion, suitable for pandemic and the control of it.” Pedro Santos, arch.

“The interaction intent and the formal aesthetic design of the project are very ingenious. However, the presentation does not clarify the details of materiality and climate adaptability of different planet vs. project execution regions.” Joanna Helm, arch.

3nd PLACE - ID000610:

“This structure reflects the character of an emergent need, with na easy assembly na transportation. A great solution for any enviorement. It is a god pointo of view of reuse this struture to any public equipement after the pandemic.” Pedro Santos, arch.

“The project includes the slogans proposed by the competition, the schooling form is very dynamic and easy to manufacture the structure, materiality of easy execution, and adaptability in implementation. In addition to considering reusing the equipment for other purposes in the future.”, Joanna Helm, arch.
